CHOICES OVER SOCIETY VALUES

Chiyambi: I want to be a modern farmer- file photo.

By Emerson Sam Navaya

The little girl in the image, I call her Chiyambi (not real name) stands as a proof to the unshakeable dedication and passion that defines true calling. Her choice to pursue a career in agriculture, a field often overlooked and underappreciated, is a bold statement that challenges societal norms and expectations. Chiyambi, a less than 10 years eyes for farmers like Napoleon Dzombe, Prof. Immanuel Mlenga and more importantly Abraham who farmed carmels, sheep among others.

In a society where professions like nursing, law, and banking are often revered and sought after, this young girl's decision to become a farmer is a refreshing anomaly. It is a choice that requires not only hard work and perseverance but also a deep-seated passion for the land and a commitment to nurturing it.

"I sought for careers that envelope all other fields in life. Be it a nurse, banker, a player etc will sit down look for food. So for me, I stand between them and I make food available and I will be very happy soul", Chiyambi proudly said.

The biblical narrative is replete with examples of individuals who defied conventional wisdom and followed their hearts, often at great personal cost. The story of Abraham, who left his family and homeland to follow God's call, is a powerful example of this kind of faith and obedience (Genesis 12:1-5). Similarly, the apostles, who left their nets and livelihoods to follow Jesus, demonstrate the kind of radical commitment that is required to pursue one's true calling (Matthew 4:18-22).

In the same vein, this young girl's decision to become a farmer is a testament to her courage and conviction. She is not swayed by the opinions of others or the lure of more "prestigious" careers. Instead, she is driven by a deep passion for the land and a desire to cultivate it.

As the Bible says, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). This young girl's choice to pursue a career in agriculture is a manifestation of her own unique plan, one that is guided by her passions and values.

In a world that often prioritizes material success and prestige, Chiyambi's decision to become a farmer seems a powerful counter-narrative.

"The farming I desire is more than being a farmer rather the one I believe to serve the nature God created", Says Chiyambi.

To us; it reminds us that true fulfillment and purpose are not necessarily tied to external validation or wealth, but rather to our deep-rooted passions and values.

As we look to the future, I can only hope that Chiyambi will continue to pursue her dreams, undeterred by the opinions of others. As my pen is set to dry up ink, May you find this story inspiring- to follow your own unique callings, and may we all be reminded of the importance of defining our true passions, no matter how unconventional they may seem.
